Piercing jewelry types: Captive bead ring
Captive bead rings (abbreviated CBRs) are a popular type of body jewelry. They are also known as ball closure rings or captive ball rings. CBRs come in a variety of diameters or gauges, and are usually made of surgical-grade steel or titanium.
The CBR has two parts – the ring and the bead. The ring has a small opening that a dimpled bead fits snugly into. The bead is held in purely by tension. Because there is no threading or other ridges in which bacteria can collect, and because there is little risk of snagging the jewelry on hair, clothing, and other loose articles, the CBR is considered to be ideal for many non-surface body piercings, especially in the ear.
Many smaller-gauge CBRs can be removed easily by the wearer, but often larger gauge jewelry require a tool called a ring-opener to remove. It's always best to see a professional piercer for the removal of any type of body jewelry, especially when it's the first change of jewelry after a piercing is healed. This minimizes the risk of irritation or the piercing closing before the new jewelry is inserted.
Because of it's commonplace in the piercing world, the CBR has become an almost universal symbol of the body piercing industry. Many industry-specific companies, including the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) use the CBR in their logo.
Although the CBR is a good choice of

Surface piercings, such as corset piercings, have been performed with CBRs and resulted in a lot of irritation and unsightly scars from jewelry migration, when a piercing is rejected from the body and pushed out. While migration is always a risk with any body piercing, the extra pressure from the ring in a surface piercing greatly increases the risk. It's always important to know what type of jewelry is best suited for a specific piercing.
CBRs come in many different colors and styles. While the basic design is the same, buyers can choose to go with a small pink ring for a more feminine look, or larger black titanium. Different styles of beads can be used as well. Beads can be made of glass and semi-Precious Stones, have beveled stones set in, or even shapes like dice or skulls. Many people with piercings will chose to keep CBRs even in a healed piercing either for convenience (unlike studs with butterfly backs they have no crevices in which dirt can build up making them very easy to clean) or simply for style.
A modification of the CBR is a segment ring. The same principal is used in the design of segment rings, but rather than a ball held in by tension a piece that completes the ring is used instead, giving the illusion of a seamless ring going through the skin.
