Lessons to Learn from the Career of Charles Phillips
There is much to learn from Charles Phillips’ career and one doesn’t even have to be involved in IT in order to do so. After all, Phillips’ career in IT wasn’t evident at the start. Although he studied computer science in college, one also has to consider the fact that he did so in the Air Force Academy. Moreover, he also completed his law degree. His highly varied educational background thus made any career path more than plausible for him. Prior to his appointment as CEO of Infor and, before that, Co-President of Oracle, he had worn many other hats. For a time, he served as an intelligence officer in the Marines. After that, he also became one of the hotshot analysts of Morgan Stanley. His analyses were terribly precise, enough for Institutional Investor magazine to hail him issue after issue. From this, one lesson can be easily learned, and that’s not to be afraid to try new things until one finds the “right” and “ideal” path to take.

also proved to be an inspiration when he started working for Oracle. For such a long time, Oracle had always been in the shadow of SAP, the leader of the enterprise software industry. Phillips, being aware of how the IT market worked during his years as an analyst with Morgan Stanley, knew that it would be futile for Oracle to go after SAP through ERP. Instead of giving up and finding a new goal, however, Phillips decided to use a ‘wedge’ strategy. This takes place by isolating the competitor’s main product or wedging it between a rock and a hard place by snapping up complementary products.
SAP was the leader of ERP and especially for those designed to suit the largest corporations. SAP was not, however, the industry leader for function or department-specific software applications. That was SAP’s weakness and Phillips readily exploited it. He took on companies that would make Oracle the leader for human resource management software, transportation management software, performance management software, and everything else but ERP that a company may need of.
In all the years that Oracle had been competing with SAP, only Charles Phillips had hit upon such a brilliant solution. Certainly, his numerous M&A’s paid off in time, allowing Oracle to conquer accounts that used to be firmly entrenched in SAP’s camp. This was no surprise, though, since in some cases Phillips left clients no choice. Even if they liked having their ERP from SAP, it just didn’t make sense to stick with SAP when everything else they were using was from Oracle. As for this last lesson, Phillips has proven that even the mightiest can fall with the smartest of moves.
