Mahjong: An introduction to the West
American Anthropologist Stewart Culina mentioned in one of his works in 1895, the game Mahjong. This was the first written mention of the game in a language other than Chinese. By 1910, there were various mentions about the game, in many languages, including Japanese and French. During the 1920s, Mahjong game was imported to the United States.
Abercrombie and Fitch in 1920 started selling the first set of Mahjong in the United States. The game quickly became a sensation in New York, and the owner of the company named Ezra Fitch, sent ambassadors to Chinese villages to buy and bring back home any set of game they found. Abercrombie and Fitch sold a total of 12,000 sets of Mahjong.
Joseph Park Babcock in 1920 published a book entitled Mah-Jongg game rules, called "Red Book", which became the first edition of mahjong known in America. Babcock be instructed about the game mahjong game while he lived in China.
Babcock's rules have made the game easier and easier to adapt to the game Americans, and his version became the most famous in the heyday of the 1920s mahjong. Later, after the fashion of the 1920s has disappeared, many of Babcock's simplifications were eliminated.
The game has been associated with famous names such as "Game of the thousand smart" and "Chow bags." At that time in America meant Mahjong evenings guests dressed elegantly and decorated in Chinese style

The game was standardized in 1937 and founded the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), together with the first book of rules for American mahjong game, Maajh: American version of the ancient Chinese game.
During Babcock, when the game mahjong was known American players of all ethnicities, many believe it was a game adaptation of a modern American Hebrew, as some American mahjong players players were of Hebrew origin. Hebrew National League players founded Mah Jongg, NMJL and Hebrew are known as an organization. Furthermore, the game became a social activity for families, as opposed to gambling.
Recently, a second association was founded as the American Association of Mah Jongg.AMJA currently organizes tournaments in different places in North America, the most famous being the event which takes place at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
In 1977 a British author named Alan D. Millington revived the traditional Chinese game of 1920, the book Mah-jongg full book, this book mentions the formal rules for this game. Many players in Western countries consider Millington's as worthy of confidence.
