Historically gemstones were classified into two categories, Precious Stones and semi-precious stones, in this article we will talk about traditional precious stones. There are four stones that are classed as precious they are diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald, all other gemstones are classed as semi-precious.
Apart from diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald, amethyst was considered to be a precious gem until the discoveries of bulk amethyst in Brazil in the 19th century. Also pearl can be classed as a precious gem but (strictly speaking it is not a gemstone).
Today many gemstones are used in the most expensive jewelry depending on the designer and fashion trends and availability of gemstones, never the less diamonds, rubies, sapphire and emeralds still have a reputation that exceeds all the other gemstones.
Diamonds are the hardest natural substance known to man, they were first discovered about 6,ooo years ago and were all ways considered to be a precious gemstone, the popularity of diamonds has risen since the 19th century because of increased supply, improved cutting and polishing techniques, and this combined with its exceptional luster and brilliant fire, has made it the most highly prized of all gems.
Rubies the name given to red, gem quality (corundum), is one of the best gemstones for jewelry settings. Rubies may be in any shade of red, from pinkish to purplish or brown red but the finest ruby is best described as the colour of pigeon blood. All natural rubies have imperfections in them, including color impurities and inclusions to a trained eye the presence of these imperfections distinguish a genuine ruby from synthetics. All most all rubies are treated in some form, heat treatment is the most common practice, however rubies that are of excellent quality and are untreated command a large premium.
Sapphire, all gem quality (corundum) that is not red is called sapphire, this name is associated with the color blue and is highly prized as a gemstone. Normally ranges from very Pale Blue to a deep indigo but the most valuable is a clear, deep blue, some stones called “colour change sapphire”, exhibit different shades of blue in natural and artificial light. Sapphires also come in many other colors, colorless, yellow, pale pink, orange, green, violet and black, they are called fancy color sapphire. Up until the end of the 19th century yellow sapphire was known as “oriental topaz” only blue (corundum) was called sapphire.
Rubies and sapphires are classed as (corundum) where as emeralds are something completely different, emeralds are classed as (beryl). Medium to Dark Green variety of beryl is highly valued as a gemstone, most emeralds are flawed and cloudy, a flawless emerald with good color is one of the most sought after and command high prices. Most emeralds are oiled in order to improve there clarity, this is a generally accepted practice in the gem trade. If you are considering purchasing a expensive emerald it is well advised to insist upon a report from a reputable gemological laboratory.
All of these gemstones have synthetic counterparts that are make in laboratories a synthetic diamond is a Cubic Zirconia, and ruby, sapphire and emerald synthetic are called created gems, created ruby, created sapphire and created emeralds. Although they are man made they are good quality gems which are inclusion free, a lot of jewelry designers use synthetics in their designs and make beautiful pieces of jewelry at a affordable price. They should not be dismissed as pieces of junk jewelry and should be classed as a well designed peace of Fashion Jewelry.
Diamonds rate 10 on mohs’ scale of hardness, being the hardest of all gemstones, ruby and sapphire rates 9 on mohs’ scale and emerald rates 7.5 on mohs’ scale which means all of these precious gemstones are quite hard. They will stand up to being worn frequently and if cleaned regularly will stay as beautiful as the day you got them. The best way to clean diamonds, ruby, and sapphire is in a ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, but when it comes to emeralds I do not recommend that you use a ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, it may remove the oils that emeralds are treated with to hide the natural inclusions, a little detergent in some warm water and a soft toothbrush will be a little gentler and will not damage the stone.
